Since launching in 2016, the Pelvic Awareness Project has worked to create a world where all women have access to pelvic health education and care. We remain committed to giving women the tools they need to improve their pelvic health.
It’s never been easier to find a pelvic floor specialist near you. Our new online ‘Physician Finder’ tool can help connect you with a nearby specialist, all from the comfort and privacy of your own home. If you think you may be experiencing pelvic floor dysfunction, this tool can help you easily access treatment.
Pelvic Floor Support
The pelvic floor is the sling of muscles running between your pubic bone and tailbone. It supports your pelvic organs (the bladder, reproductive organs and bowels) and maintains your bladder and bowel control. It also supports the fetus during pregnancy and contributes to sexual sensations.
Pelvic floor disorders are very common among women, often triggered by pregnancy and vaginal childbirth, age, lifestyle and genetics. Our organization is committed to empowering women everywhere who struggle with pelvic floor disorders to get the help they need.
Pelvic floor disorders are often complex. That’s why you might require a specialist to get the help you need.
Pelvic Floor Specialists Near You
We are delighted to now offer a ‘Physician Finder’ feature on our website. This free tool connects users to pelvic floor, gynecological, and urogynecological specialists in their area. You can either use the interactive map or search feature to browse physicians near you who specialize in your condition.
When you use the Physician Finder, you can browse physicians by specialty, conditions treated and languages spoken. Each physician you find will have a short bio, which will let you get to know more about them and their background.
While primary care doctors are becoming more well-versed in pelvic floor disorders, the complexity of these issues may require a specialist. You may require help from a urologist, gynecologist, urogynecologist or MIGS specialist. Urologists focus on urinary tract systems and bladder issues, and they may be trained in pelvic organ prolapse. Gynecologists are trained in pelvic and reproductive medicine. Urogynecology is a new field that offers the most specialized care for pelvic floor disorders. And Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery, or MIGS, is a specialty that can be used to treat conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts and abnormal bleeding. Learn more about these specialists here.
Our Physician Finder will let you find each type of specialist in your area. But don’t worry if you don’t know what type of specialist you need, as you can also search by condition treated.
While we encourage you to be shame-free about your health, the truth is that many women feel embarrassed about leakage and other pelvic floor disorders. Sometimes, the hardest part of treatment is asking for help. We hope that our new Physician Finder will help more women make the first step towards improving their pelvic floor health – and often, their quality of life.
